The prototype was based on a Scirocco, with a twin-carburetor EA827 engine and a lowered and stiffened suspension. When Volkswagen's head of research drove this prototype, he objected to the harsh suspension and excessive noise from the intake system and declared the car "undriveable". Nevertheless, the VW Golf GTI team persevered and eventually assembled an exceptional automobile.
Gunhild Liljequist was tasked with creating a feature set that would set the GTI's interior apart from the standard Golf. Her contributions have become automotive interior design legends: the glossy tartan upholstery and the golf ball-shaped dimpled gear knob, making this sock design a no-brainer for us.
